The presence of the Comboni Missionaries
Our missionary service in Malawi began in the Archdiocese of Blantyre, with the arrival of Fr. Gusmini. Four parishes were entrusted to us in the Mulanje District: Phalombe, Chiringa, Muloza and Gambula in 1974; and another two in the Shire Highlands: Lirangwe and Lisungwe in 1977. In the same year Malawi was constituted a Delegation with Fr. J. Rodriguez as Superior. In 1982 we were entrusted with the foundation of a parish at Mthawira and South Lunzu in Blantyre Archdiocese. The Province of Malawi / Zambia was constituted in 1984 with Fr. Luigi Casagrande appointed as its first Provincial Superior. One confrere taught at Zomba Major Seminary from 1980 to 1984. We began our presence at Kachebere Major Seminary in 1983. Muloza Parish was handed over to the diocese in 1986. In the same year the postulancy was started to Balaka. The ICS (inter-congregation seminary) was established in Balaka in 1988.
The Comboni Missionaries began their missionary service in Zambia in November 1977 with the arrival of Fr. Kizito Sesana in Chipata Diocese. Two Parishes were accepted: Chadiza in 1978 and Vubwi in 1979. St. Mathias Mulumba Parish was opened in 1983. We started our presence in Chikowa Mission in 1983. A community was established there in 1985 to take pastoral care of the parish and to run the Chikowa Youth Project. One confrere worked at Chikungu Pastoral Centre from 1984 to 1987. The parish of Vubwi was returned to the diocese in 1987 and Chadiza Parish in 1988. In the same year we started our presence with one community in Lilanda, Lusaka, taking care of two parishes in the outskirts of the city: St. Kizito and St. Andrew Kaggwa (Lilanda). In 1997 we opened a Parish in Chama, in the diocese in Chipata, as a commitment of first evangelisation. In 2001 the novitiate was opened in Bauleni, Lusaka. It receives novices from the provinces of Malawi/Zambia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Mozambique and South Africa.
In Zambia we are involved mainly in the work of first evangelisation, formation of Christian leaders, human promotion, poverty alleviation and youth ministry. We are also involved in the work of mission animation of the local Church and vocation promotion. We have three Zambian Comboni priests and some theology students and novices. We carry out the work of evangelisation in different ways but with the same spirit of St. Daniel Comboni, who had a deep trust in God, a strong passion for the mission and a great love for the peoples of Africa, especially for the poor and most abandoned.
